Abdullah, who is Umno president, had announced that he would hand over the reins by 2010 to his deputy Datuk Seri Najib Razak as part of a transition plan.
Muhyiddin had made the statement in Singapore earlier today while also praising the virtues of former president Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed, whose return to the party he has been brokering.
"I think he should make up his mind," said Domestic Trade and Consumer' Affairs Minister Datuk Shahrir Samad, referring to Muhyiddin's earlier acceptance of the transition plan.
"After meeting Tun Dr Mahathir, now he wants Abdullah to resign earlier. I see no reason why Mahathir himself wants to rejoin Umno when nothing has changed in the party. He said he won't rejoin until he saw the changes he wanted," he remarked.
He added that "they both need each other", an apparent reference to Abdullah and Najib's role in the near future.
Former Perlis Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim also insisted that the succession plan had been agreed to by all and that they should stick to their promise.
"Just because we change the president doesn't mean we'll become stronger," he said.
Umno Youth chief Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said that the matter was not discussed today but if Muhyiddin wanted a change in the agreed timeframe, he would have to bring it up to the supreme council.
"Muhyiddin was a member of the supreme council when we made the decision on the transition," he noted, implying that the vice president was part of the leadership who had agreed to the plan.
